National Night Out (NNO) is celebrated every year on the first Tuesday of August, which just recently passed. We are proud to celebrate our local law enforcement every year along with millions of supporters across the country. The NNO’s mission is to promote “police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live.”
National Night Out Puts Focus On Community
What’s now a national event first began in one community in Pennsylvania when a community watch volunteer helped build his neighborhood watch program to great success and desired there to be a platform that connected all watch programs across the nation.
First came the National Association of Town Watch, which was founded to provide community watch groups with necessary resources and assets to stay “informed, interested, involved, and motivated within the community.” NATW saw promising growth in a short amount of time and introduced National Night Out in August of 1984. The NNO saw promising growth too as the first annual event involved around “2.5 million neighbors across 400 communities in 23 states.”
Presently, entire neighborhoods nationwide come together to host block parties, festivals, and parades and invite their local law enforcement out to be recognized as well as to educate the community on their jobs, equipment, and more. What’s truly great about NNO is that anyone, anywhere can participate and the NNO organization provides all the information and resources needed to plan an event. They even have national awards where communities can compete against another community of equal size.
How Sonitrol Celebrates National Night Out
This year, several of our locations attended local celebrations and joined hundreds of others in parks and neighborhoods for festivals, safety equipment demonstrations, and family fun. Check out the pictures below to see our tent set up, giveaways, and how much fun our staff had this year.
Everyday, police officers are proud to put on their uniforms but especially proud to do so on National Night Out. It’s never too early to start planning for next year’s NNO. Click here to get information and resources.
